Violet And Brian Wedding

ORIGINAL POST DATE: August 5, 2015

Bride and Groom as well as family and friends occupied all of the units at Opal 28 to get ready.  The ceremony took place off site but the party returned via a bus for a DJ facilitated dance party, hand picked local craft beer, full open bar, mashable chocolate bears and donuts for dessert.  Food carts for dinner included wood fired pizza and island BBQ (the Local Grind) set up on NE 28th and served guests all night while Opal 28 in house catering provided heavy appetizers inside, with gluten free options for the MOB!  A terrific party that concluded with romantic photos at the neighboring Laundromat!

Owner Margot Feves Reminisces

ORIGINAL POST DATE: October 15, 2014

In the Fall of 2005 I was just about a year under my belt with my first job out of college.  I was living my dream (at the time.)  One bedroom apartment in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, meeting lots of new friends and working long grueling hours as an assistant account executive at the famed ad agency Leo Burnett.  Working over time paid off when the 2005 Leo Burnett Agency Wide Holiday Party invitation popped up.

This annual affair had the reputation of being a little "over the top"… It started with team mimosas at 11am, moving into an auditorium style “Year in Review” at the Chicago Theater with 450 or so of my colleagues; then to an all day “restaurant buy out” at Sushi Samba, including endless tables of sushi rolls, tempura, cocktails, DJ and mingling with coworkers, many I had never talked to let alone seen before.  After Sushi Samba the holiday celebration continued with an after party at one of Chicago busiest nightclubs.  No waiting in line though, the after party started at 4pm!  This was the kind of event that I still remember the Kenneth Cole pink sequined tank top and skinny black pants that I bought special for the occasion.

9 years later I have no idea if the Leo Burnett Holiday party is still an all day affair but I do know that winter changed the way I viewed holiday parties.  Prior to that night the only holiday festivities I had attended were with my parents for dinner at Jakes or during the college years of Ugly Sweater keggers at the frat house.

Now that I own and operate an event space I am SO EXCITED for the holiday season.   Months ago I bought snowflake decals for the windows at Opal 28 and festive serving platters.  There is something so jolly about December and I can’t wait…. Maybe I will even dig out that pink sequined top to wear!

Cheers to the holidays!

XXOO,

Margot

Its been a crazy month since the first blog but WOW a lot has been happening.  The vacation rentals have been booked and we have a new addition to the entry way.  Our friends at Portland Bee Balm have made Opal 28 a custom Portland Bee Balm display and honor box.  We hope our vacation rental guests enjoy this Portland made amenity!

We have been hosting a myriad of private events-----among some of our favs have been a private performance with Brandy Carlisle.  Just a week after opening for Dave Mathews Band in the Gorge, the Seattle based musician played an intimate afternoon show to benefit The Looking Out Foundation.

The Portland chapter of the Wedding Network enjoyed their quarterly dinner in the Reserve Room.  Bill Horton from Biz Fix gave a great presentation.  You can find details of his seminars at www.bizfixnow.com.

As you know we have a commercial kitchen on site that various artisan food purveyors use, one of our first tenants SMASHED! Boozy Jams + Jellies'  has been nominated by the 2014 Martha Stewart American Made Awards.  VOTE for Jeannine today and you can buy her yummy products on Etsy.  If you are looking for kitchen space please let us know!

The leaves are starting to change and there is an evening chill in the air signaling that Fall is just about here.  We are elated about this because holiday events are just around the corner!  Stay tuned for Opal 28 to get a holiday makeover, we are not talking red and green garland but we have some fun design ideas brewing as well as holiday themed drinks and food options!   Are you looking for December event space?  Book your festivities at Opal 28 by Sept. 30th to receive complementary peppermint brownies for all your guests.

Our First Blog & Portland Business Journal Honors Opal 28!

ORIGNAL POST DATE: August 14, 2014

Special day today!  Its Opal 28’s first blog post AND the Portland Business Journal honored us as a Better Bricks Commercial Real Estate Retail Project of the Year. What an honor!  http://bizj.us/10tlzf/i/25 / http://bizj.us/10tlzf/i/26

This honor would not have been possible with out the endless hours that owner, Margot Feves and her closest family and friends put in------everything from offering her advice, cleaning out, painting, choosing colors, finding heirlooms in family storage, moving furniture, building things, developing menus and process’ and much more…

In December 2013, Margot got the keys to her dream property.  Opal 28 was originally built in 1908 as a single family home, in the 1950’s was remodeled into 4 apartments upstairs and retail on the ground level. Upstairs, Margot has transitioned the apts. into 4 separate vacation rentals each with unique character where guests immerse themselves in an authentic Portland experience. The hallway is adored with her grandmothers art and antique furniture.

Downstairs, the ground level retail space has been converted into an intimate and versatile event space, hosting everything from upscale weddings to corporate off-sites to princess parties for gaggles of laughing little girls. The commercial kitchen houses some of Portland’s most creative culinary entrepreneurs, and its own versatile in-house caterer who can prepare everything from Hawaiian BBQ to delicate farm-to-table finger foods depending on the crowd.

Outside, Opal 28 has an airy private patio for mingling.

Margot reminisces about her favorite part of the Opal 28 project by saying, “every obstacle has become a new adventure and opportunity—--when I got the keys the space was overflowing with stuff I never thought I could use.  When I look around the space now I am elated to see so much re-purposed materials—from shelving to coat hooks to outdoor lighting and signage.   It was like I had my very own rebuilding center, it credits the nostalgia and history of the property.”

Welcome to the Opal 28 blog, where we will be sharing all of Opal 28’s happenings including our favorite event trends, cooking ideas, places to visit in Portland and lots of photos of past parties!  Looking to host a small group or up to 125 person cocktail reception---we are already excited to meet you!
